Dhruvkaran Mehta, Bitcoin Core Developer, has announced his resignation from the project and will no longer receive funding from Bitcoin Core for the next year. Mehta began working for the Bitcoin Core in August 2020, focusing on improving BTC’s P2P protocol through BIP324.
Pursuing A Bitcoin Startup Idea
In a recent tweet, Mehta stated that he has decided not to pursue another year of Bitcoin Core open-source grants. He explained that he has a BTC startup idea that he is excited about and wishes to pursue.
As a parent of twin toddlers, he feels that he still has plenty of availability, but it’s unpredictable, and he needs to be able to be useful when he is available.
Mehta went on to explain that BIP324’s initial phase required more persistent work, and he could always use the time he had well. However, the current phase is community-dependent, and he needs to be available when reviewers choose to review.
He also mentioned that Bitcoin Core’s refactor culture is on the uptick, and BIP324 is a sweeping project. He rebased more often than received meaningful reviews, which became somewhat tedious.
Mehta also stated that his psychology is at odds with some of the prevalent development cultures now. He conveyed his appreciation to his benefactors, who have been exceptionally benevolent and have given him a chance to engage in the most significant work of his existence.
Mehta expressed that relying on the generosity of a few kind individuals through the grant model was no longer sufficient, and he believed it was time to generate income from a position of power.
As a result, he stated that Pieter Wuille (@pwuille) would be assuming responsibility for the pull requests, beginning with the latest #27479, as he believed that BIP324 would be in better hands under his supervision.
Bitcoin Core is a community project, and the community values these refactors, which get reviewed, ACKs, and get merged. Mehta said that he’s optimistic about the world they are building for their children, and the best thing about BTC is all the passionate people around it.
Nevertheless, Dhruvkaran Mehta’s resignation from Bitcoin Core marks the end of an era, but it’s also the beginning of a new one for him as he embarks on his startup idea.
