Key Takeaways
- Poșta Română installs its first Bitcoin ATM in Tulcea, aiming to boost financial inclusion.
- The partnership with Bitcoin Romania (BTR) signals a major step into digital finance.
- Romania joins global efforts to modernize public services through crypto integration.
Poșta Română has launched its first Bitcoin ATM in the city of Tulcea, becoming the first public institution in Romania to integrate cryptocurrency services directly into its postal network.
This development is part of a broader collaboration with BTR Exchange, the country’s leading crypto platform, which enables users to deposit cash and top up their Bitcoin accounts directly at post office counters.
The pilot terminal, now active in Tulcea’s Post Office 1, allows users to easily fund their Bitcoin Romania accounts using fiat currency. This user-friendly model is designed to simplify access to crypto services, especially for individuals in areas with limited digital infrastructure. It’s also a move in line with Romania’s push to strengthen financial inclusion and modernize public services.
The pilot does not stop in Tulcea. Terminals will be installed in four more locations: Alexandria, Piatra Neamț, Botoșani, and Nădlac. The rollout is phase-wise to see how the public responds and how it performs operationally.
Poșta Română’s Digital Shift Echoes Past Innovations
This is not the first digital innovation by Poșta Română. In 2022, the postal service launched Romania’s first NFT backed by a public institution, celebrating 160 years of postal history. An auction of part of the NFT collection was organized to raise money for HOSPICE Casa Speranței, a Romanian palliative care non-governmental organization.
The pace was kept in 2023 by a new NFT and postcard collection honoring Romania’s anti-communist heroes, produced by the project “Dignity and Courage.”
That project was executed together with the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) and Humanitas Publishing House; therefore, that technology not only enhanced but also reinforced the cultural engagement of The Post.
Such milestones reflect the Romanian Post’s dedication to integrating technology and innovation within its core structure. The crypto terminal project is not a pursuit of a trend but rather a strategic shift based on previous successful digital interactions.
Only 4% of the World Holds Bitcoin as Wallet Usage Rises Sharply
While this initiative holds great promise, global adoption of Bitcoin remains low. A report from River, a U.S.-based Bitcoin financial services firm, which was published in Q1 2025, indicated that only 4% of the world’s population currently holds BTC.
Meanwhile, Binance highlighted a significant increase in wallet usage; more than 30 million wallets now contain at least $100 worth of BTC, marking an annual growth of 25%. These stats point out that while interest in Bitcoin is growing, efforts like a Poșta Română initiative are crucial to helping translate that curiosity into real-world interaction.
