Bitcoin
  • BlackRock buys $398.6M Bitcoin despite ETF’s 5.3% market drop.
  • Google’s Willow solves computations faster than supercomputers.
  • Quantum threats to Bitcoin encryption spark market concerns.

As Google’s Willow chip stirs fears of quantum threats to Bitcoin, BlackRock’s $IBIT sees a 5.3% drop. However, with a $398.6M Bitcoin purchase, BlackRock shows its confidence in the cryptocurrency’s long-term potential amid emerging technological risks.

BlackRock’s $IBIT Falls 5.3% Amid Quantum Computing Fears

BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF ($IBIT) dropped 5.3% on Tuesday, its largest daily decline in four months. The dip was caused by market fears about Google’s quantum computing chip, Willow, and its potential implications for Bitcoin’s cryptographic security. Investors have raised concerns that such developments could threaten the security for digital assets.

Quantum computing poses potential risks to cryptographic systems especially adopted by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Google’s Willow chip also shows many computational breakthroughs and solves multiple tasks faster than conventional supercomputers.

Although experts agree that quantum technology is not sophisticated enough to crack Bitcoin encryption, the awareness of future vulnerabilities has impacted market confidence.

BlackRock Strengthens Crypto Holdings with a $398.6M Bitcoin Buy

Despite the market’s volatility, BlackRock has continued to diversify its cryptocurrency portfolio. On December 9, BlackRock purchased $398.6 million worth of Bitcoin. This $IBIT purchase marks a BlackRock purchase streak of seven days which amounts to over $3.14 billion Bitcoin holdings. This has highlighted investor’s confidence in the long-term potential of Bitcoin.

The BlackRock purchase shows institutional investors ’ role in the cryptocurrency market, thus it signals increased mainstream adoption. BlackRock’s recent purchase demonstrates resilience amid short-term price volatility and  technological challenges. The above actions by institutional investors could stabilize the Bitcoin prices an validate Bitcoin as a viable investment asset.

Willow Solves Computations Faster Than Any Supercomputer

Google developed Willow, a quantum computing chip that represents a major advancement in computational capabilities. Willow uses 105 qubits, which reduces errors exponentially and enables it to solve problems that would take traditional supercomputers billions of years to complete. This technological achievement is a critical step in advancing quantum computing.

University of Sussex researchers estimate that breaking #Bitcoin encryption in 1 day would need 13M qubits. Willow has 105 qubits. Not possible today, but theoretically:

Experts have clarified Willow is not yet a threat to current cryptographic systems. Cracking Bitcoin’s encryption would require millions of qubits which exceed Willow’s capabilities. Bitcoin uses algorithms like SHA-256 for mining and ECDSA for signatures. However, its progress illustrates the need to plan for a quantum future,  as industries seek quantum-resistant methods and algorithms to protect core applications.
