Ethereum’s Thriving Ecosystem: Unlocking L1 and L2 Synergy

The Ethereum Foundation has set forth a detailed plan for the future of its Layer 1 (L1) and Layer 2 (L2) ecosystem, highlighting that L2s will be moving away from simply being scaling solutions to becoming providers of unique and customised services. This change in strategy intends to improve the entire Ether ecosystem, creating a more varied and stronger network.

L1: The Backbone of Global Settlement and DeFi

Ethereum’s L1 will remain the global settlement layer and the main hub for decentralised finance (DeFi), taking advantage of its high level of security and decentralisation. The Foundation is aiming to scale up L1 and Blobs, which are at present only ~30% full, to cater to the increasing demand. This enhancement will allow for better data management and transaction processing, making Ethereum the leader in blockchain technology.

L2s: Security & Innovation Now Mandatory

It is now a standard for L2 solutions to provide more than just scaling; they need to give unique services while adhering to high security standards. According to the Ethereum Foundation statement, L2s should secure at least Stage 1 security standards and aim for Stage 2, which features synchronous composability and “native rollups.” This change will not only push the L2s for innovation and specialisation but also lead to the emergence of a vibrant ecosystem.

Ethereum’s Cross-Chain Goal

The Ethereum Foundation believes that the key to solving the fragmentation of cross-chain experiences lies in through-chain communication. Accordingly, the Foundation is giving it the top priority. Ether developers are collaborating to make the communication between L1 and L2s so efficient that it would offer a very smooth user and developer experience, which would naturally result in higher adoption and growth.
