Ethereum Developers Agree To Include Three Additional EIPs In Cancun Upgrade

In a recent development in the world of Ethereum, the cryptocurrency developers have agreed to include three additional EIPs in the upcoming Cancun upgrade. This decision was announced by a tweet by Christine Kim, a research analyst at GalaxyHQ and formerly of CoinDesk.

New Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs)

The Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that will be included in Cancun are EIP 6780, EIP 6475, and EIP 1153. The first of these proposals will change the functionality of the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, which will send all ETH in an account to the caller, except when the opcode is called in the same transaction that a contract was created.

EIP 6475 will introduce a new Simple Serialize (SSZ) type to represent optional values, which will make the implementation of EIP 4844 more future-compatible with a larger forthcoming SSZ update to the EL of Ethereum. EIP 1153 will add new opcodes for manipulating a state that behaves identically to storage opcodes but is discarded after every transaction.

It is important to note that the discussion around the scope of Cancun is still ongoing, and several other EIPs are still under review for potential inclusion in the upgrade. However, the EIP 6780 inclusion is conditional based on the results of an audit, which will be released in approximately one month’s time. Furthermore, there are minor tweaks that need to be made to EIP 6475 over the next few days to make it Cancun-ready.

Interestingly, the only EIPs that were taken off the table for Cancun were the code changes related to Ethereum Virtual Machine Object Format (EOF). One of the developers working on EOF implementation, @shemnon, commented on this decision saying, “As much as it hurts, I think it’s the right decision.”

The Cancun upgrade promises to bring significant changes to the Ethereum ecosystem, and the inclusion of these EIPs will undoubtedly play a crucial role in achieving this goal. Ethereum users and enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for the release of the audit results and the completion of the minor tweaks to EIP 6475 to see the complete list of changes that will be implemented in the upcoming upgrade.
