Ethereum Developers Lock April 8 for Pectra Mainnet Upgrade After Massive Test Runs

By Usman Zafar | Edited By Ammar Raza,February 15, 2025, 11:34 AM

Ethereum
  • Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Pectra, will hit Holesky and Sepolia testnets on February 24 and March 5, with the mainnet upgrade planned for April 8.
  • Developers debated the timeline for freezing Fusaka’s scope, with extended discussions over EIP inclusion and upgrade coordination.
  • Concerns about bandwidth and resource allocation were raised, especially around the EELS and EEST requirements for future EIPs.

Ethereum’s All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #205 finalized the schedule for the Pectra upgrade, targeting the Holesky testnet on February 24 and Sepolia on March 5. Assuming smooth execution, the mainnet upgrade is expected by April 8.

The discussion, chaired by Ethereum Foundation Protocol Support Lead Tim Beiko, also addressed potential improvements to Fusaka, Ethereum’s next upgrade.

Developers debated timelines for including new EIPs, with Geth representatives expressing reservations about specific inclusions and advocating for a longer review process.

EF Developer Operations Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi confirmed the successful performance of Pectra Devnet 6, highlighting near-perfect validator participation.

In preparation, all client teams affirmed readiness for software releases. Developers are now focusing on deploying Pectra contracts and ensuring compatibility across testnets, while Beiko reminded EIP authors to move their proposals to the “last call” stage.

Fusaka Sparks Debate on Upgrade Priorities

The scope of Fusaka, expected to follow Pectra, was a contentious point. Developers debated freezing its scope to expedite delivery but faced pushback over the inclusion of certain EIPs like EOF.

Beiko proposed extending the timeline for EIP submissions and emphasized the importance of parallelizing development efforts.

Geth developer Lightclient argued for prioritizing impactful changes over rigid upgrade schedules, citing uncertainties in zkEVM advancements and their implications for Ethereum’s long-term goals.

Despite disagreements, developers tentatively agreed on a timeline to finalize Fusaka’s scope by mid-April, shortly after Pectra’s anticipated mainnet activation. Proposals included shipping PeerDAS and EOF together to streamline future upgrades, though concerns about EOF’s readiness persist.

EOF Updates and Impact on Ethereum’s Future Upgrades

Developers explored ways to reduce Ethereum’s upgrade cadence from six months to an even faster pace but acknowledged logistical challenges like public testnet upgrade timelines and ecosystem readiness.

Suggestions ranged from decoupling key EIPs like PeerDAS from broader upgrades to improving collaboration between EIP authors and client teams.

Timelines for Fusaka and Glamsterdam, Ethereum’s subsequent upgrade, remain flexible as developers aim to strike a balance between delivering impactful changes and maintaining network stability.
