Ethereum Foundation Pauses Grants as $3M ESP Program Shifts Strategy

  • Ethereum Foundation pauses its open grant applications to redesign the Ecosystem Support Program.
  • In 2024, ESP provided nearly $3 million in funding to 105 projects.
  • A new strategic model will be introduced by Q4 2025.

The Ethereum Foundation’s Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) has temporarily stopped accepting open grant applications. The pause is part of a wider plan to shift the program toward a more targeted and proactive funding strategy. In 2024, ESP distributed close to $3 million to 105 projects, showing how central it has been to builders across the Ethereum network.

These grants backed a wide range of initiatives. Commit-Boost focused on developer tools, BundleBear worked on data and analytics, Web3Bridge advanced blockchain education, ZK Playbook explored research in zero-knowledge systems, and the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress brought the community together. This variety highlights how ESP has supported almost every corner of the Ethereum ecosystem.

To support this evolution, open grant applications are temporarily paused starting today.

From Early Roots to a Critical Program

The Ethereum Foundation first launched its grants effort in 2018. Over time, it evolved into the Ecosystem Support Program, covering areas such as developer tooling, research, open standards, infrastructure, and community building. By streamlining processes in recent years, ESP became more efficient, yet it also struggled with capacity issues.

The program’s small team faced a constant flood of applications. While this approach allowed for diverse contributions, it also limited the ability to pursue new opportunities. That challenge pushed ESP to rethink its structure and focus on funding that matches Ethereum’s long-term priorities.

Adjusting to Ethereum’s Growing Scale

Ethereum has grown rapidly, both in terms of users and technical complexity. The foundation believes this scale requires a shift in how resources are allocated. ESP will now take a more selective approach, focusing on projects that strengthen Ethereum’s foundations and ensure its resilience.

Open grant applications are paused, but current grantees will continue receiving support. ESP also plans to remain active by offering non-financial help through community Office Hours. While the model is changing, the commitment to open-source work and public goods remains central to the program’s mission.

Ethereum Foundation Roadmap Toward 2025

The Ethereum Foundation has confirmed that new details about ESP’s structure will be released in Q4 2025. Until then, updates will be available on its social platforms and through quarterly allocation posts.

This pause marks an important transition. It shows the foundation’s intent to direct resources more strategically, ensuring projects that matter most to Ethereum’s future get the right support. By refining its focus, ESP hopes to give builders, researchers, and community leaders the tools needed to carry Ethereum into its next stage of growth.
