Ethereum Whale Moves 40,000 ETH – Was It Vitalik?

Co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin’s multi-signature wallet recently sent about 40,000 ETH, worth $47.7 million, to an unrecognized address. Since the holders transferred a similar amount of 30K ETH to the same unidentified wallet on May 16, this transaction represents the first ETH outflow from the wallet address in more than six months.

Colin Wu, a Chinese blockchain reporter, highlighted the most recent development on Twitter.

The wallet holds over 250,000 Ethereum

According to data from Etherscan, the transaction took place yesterday at 1:42 PM (UTC). After the outflow, the multisig wallet bearing the name tag Vb 3—signifying a connection to Vitalik Buterin—now holds 250K ETH worth $298.5M, ranking it as the 25th largest ETH holder at press time.

A close examination of the wallet’s on-chain activities reveals that, on May 16, during the panic brought on by the Terra collapse, holders made an interesting transfer to the same anonymous wallet address. 30K ETH was transferred to the same wallet address in the previous transaction.

The unidentified wallet presently has 64,301 ETH in it, valued at $76.7 million. It’s important to note that only transfers from the Vb3 address have been received by this wallet.

Ten days have passed since reports of a selloff during which the Ethereum co-founder allegedly exchanged 3,000 ETH for USDC on Uniswap V3 surfaced, and now there has been an on-chain transaction from the Buterin-affiliated address. According to The Crypto Basic, the transaction received a range of responses from the community considering its timing.

Even so, Evan Van Ness, a well-known member of the Ethereum community, appeared just 24 hours after the reports to refute suggestions that Buterin was involved in the selloff. Buterin allegedly informed Evan that the address in question is not his. Buterin remained silent on the subject in public.

Community members have left a trail of comments in response to this most recent transfer. Even though it doesn’t resemble a selloff, it raises concerns about the cause of the outflow and the function of the wallet belonging to the unidentified recipient that recently sent 5,700 ETH out 12 days ago.
