Germany’s Latest Crackdown: 47 Crypto Exchanges Shut Down for Criminal Activity

German law enforcement has made progress against cybercrime by closing 47 cryptocurrency exchanges engaged in money laundering and other illegal acts. The operation, conducted under the leadership of the Attorney General’s Office in Frankfurt, along with the Federal Criminal Police Office, was part of a broader effort to take down such platforms that did not follow the know-your-customer norms.

These exchange platforms include Xchange Cash, 60cek, and Baksman. Each of these allowed users to trade crypto and traditional currencies without verifying their identities. In addition, the absence of legal authentication allowed criminals to move unlawful funds anonymously, making such platforms a crucial element in cybercrime operations.

This included ransomware groups, darknet traders, and botnet operators leveraging these exchanges’ anonymity for money laundering from their illegal proceeds.

Broader Anti-Crypto Crime Strategy

The press release from the Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor’s Office and the BKA emphasized the extent of this operation. The exchange operators were accused of consciously trying to avoid anti-money laundering measures.

These exchanges were designed to facilitate money transactions rapidly and anonymously, masking the actual source of the illegal proceeds. The police saw the practice as not only in breach of German laws but also supportive of the very infrastructure that allowed cybercriminals to thrive.

The BKA and ZIT seized extensive user and transaction data in shutting down these services, which investigators hope will yield extensive insights for ongoing investigations into cybercrime networks. This might trace illicitly earned money to catch key players involved in such operations.

It’s all part of the broader continuing effort of German authorities to pursue the infrastructure that underpins cybercrime. They’ve shut down other major platforms serving criminal activity in recent years.

For example, in 2023, the German law enforcement authorities seized the server structure of ChipMixer-a, a well-known crypto mixer, for laundering funds on the darknet and froze assets worth about 90 million euros. Other remarkable operations involved breaking down the criminal marketplaces and destroying the malware networks Qakbot and Emotet, which caused huge destruction globally.

While international cybercrime presents more challenges, this action has reaffirmed Germany’s determination to weaken the digital infrastructure of cyber-criminals and disrupt financial networks.
