  • James Wynn suffered a $99.3 million loss on Hyperliquid after 949 BTC in long positions were liquidated as Bitcoin fell below $105,000.
  • A $1.25 billion Bitcoin long with 40x leverage collapsed amid sudden market volatility and macroeconomic fears.
  • Wynn had warned followers his strategy was “effectively gambling” just a day before the massive liquidation.

Hyperliquid, one of the leading decentralized perpetual trading platforms, became the stage for a dramatic loss this week as high-profile trader James Wynn saw nearly $100 million in leveraged Bitcoin long positions liquidated. The massive loss occurred as Bitcoin’s price suddenly fell below $105,000 on May 30, causing a cascade of liquidations across Wynn’s high-risk positions.

According to data from Hypurrscan, a Hyperliquid analytics dashboard, two major positions opened by Wynn were closed in quick succession. The first was a 527.29 BTC position worth $55.3 million, liquidated at $104,950. Moments later, a second position of 421.8 BTC, valued at $43.9 million, was liquidated as Bitcoin dipped to $104,150.

These followed a prior liquidation on May 29, when a 94 BTC position worth $10 million was closed at $106,330. In total, Wynn had 949 BTC liquidated across three days, adding up to losses of roughly $99.3 million.

Wynn’s downfall traces back to May 24, when he dramatically increased exposure by opening a $1.25 billion Bitcoin long position with 40x leverage. At the time, Bitcoin was trading at around $105,955. But the highly leveraged trade quickly soured as the crypto market reacted to renewed macroeconomic fears, particularly around former U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments regarding trade tariffs.

Though most of his positions were wiped out, Wynn still holds part of the original 40x leveraged long in a perpetual contract, now showing an unrealized loss of $3.4 million, according to Hypurrscan data.

James Wynn Warned About Risk Before $100M Hyperliquid Loss

James Wynn is no stranger to the spotlight in crypto circles. He first gained notoriety during the 2023 memecoin surge, earning millions from early investments in tokens like Pepe (PEPE). However, his trading strategy has always leaned into extreme risk, a fact he openly embraces.

In a candid post on X (formerly Twitter) dated May 29, Wynn warned followers about the dangers of his methods: “I do not follow proper risk management, nor do I claim to be a professional… I’m effectively gambling. And I stand to lose everything. I strongly advise people against what I’m doing!”

This statement proved eerily prophetic, as his bold Bitcoin bet unraveled just one day later.

Bitcoin’s price briefly wicked down to $104,630 on Coinbase and even lower on other exchanges, setting off liquidation triggers across over-leveraged positions like Wynn’s. Platforms like Arkham Intelligence and Lookonchain confirmed that Wynn’s total losses for the week reached nearly $100 million, making it one of the largest known individual liquidations on Hyperliquid.

Wynn’s Hyperliquid Liquidation and Cryptic Matrix Post

Wynn’s only public reaction after the liquidation was cryptic. He posted a screenshot from the sci-fi film The Matrix showing Neo stopping bullets mid-air, a possible metaphor for his attempt to resist the inevitable tide of the market.

Wynn’s story stands as a sobering reminder of the volatility that still underpins the crypto space, especially on platforms like Hyperliquid, where decentralized perpetual contracts allow for extreme leverage with minimal oversight.

As crypto markets continue to trend upward, Wynn’s dramatic loss underscores an important truth: high-risk leverage can magnify gains, but it can just as easily erase fortunes in an instant.
