Metaplanet to Issue ¥4.5 Billion in Bonds for Bitcoin Purchases

Japan’s Metaplanet Inc. has confirmed its plans to issue 4.5 billion yen in bonds to fund its ongoing Bitcoin acquisition. The funds raised through this bond issuance will enable the company to accelerate its Bitcoin purchases and strengthen its position in the cryptocurrency market.

The Board of Directors approved this plan on December 17, 2024. The bonds are part of Metaplanet’s fourth series of ordinary bonds and the company believes that the funds raised will facilitate their Bitcoin acquisition plans. Metaplanet has tapped the bond market through which it intends to increase its cryptocurrency holdings and achieve its long-term goals.

Bond Repayment to Be Covered by Warrant Exercise Proceeds

Metaplanet has a clear strategy of how it will repay its bonds. The company plans to fund the repayment process with proceeds from the exercise of warrants. Thus, the company will rely on the funds generated by the exercise of these warrants to cover the redemption of the bonds once they mature.

The bonds are debt securities with a 0% interest rate, with the expected maturity date set for June 16, 2025. This repayment method reflects Metaplanet’s confidence in the continued sustainability and profitability of its Bitcoin investments. This is especially because the warrant proceeds are expected to cover all bond obligations at maturity.

Metaplanet Announces Future Bond Issuance Plans for Expansion

Metaplanet intends to continue increasing its capital base by future issuance of bonds. The  company’s contracts and finance management has outlined the plan to issue up to five billion yen in private placement bonds in order to expand the purchase of Bitcoins and to strengthen its market position.

According to this strategy, Metaplanet has committed to make Bitcoin an essential part of its financial operations. The approach is quite similar to how MicroStrategy has done it. The two companies concentrate on Bitcoin as the core asset in their portfolios.
