According to the website Esports Insider, the New Jersey gaming market continues to break records year after year, with revenue surpassing $6 billion in 2024. Much of that came from iGaming and sports betting, so it is clear that New Jersey is firmly established as a leader in the mobile gambling industry. To get to that position, it has leveraged tech advances with a commitment to innovation, so the question is whether this future will include blockchain technology.

The Evolution of New Jersey’s Mobile Gambling Market

In 2024, New Jersey’s gaming industry grew 9% from the previous year. As part of this, iGaming generated just over $2.38 billion in revenue alone, which represented a 24% year-over-year increase. Since 2013, the state has looked to accommodate new tech and trends to ensure that the gaming ecosystem can continue to grow within New Jersey. Many companies have benefitted from this, such as Playstar, a casino app in NJ. The online casino offers 500 games, including live dealer options, along with personalized promotions and a loyalty program. It has cemented itself as one of the leaders in the sector. Because of this general development, competitors can now focus on innovation and look to continue to grow in the industry.

Cryptocurrency’s Emerging Role in New Jersey’s iGaming Ecosystem

Cryptocurrency is not yet mainstream in the state’s iGaming sector, but there is more and more talk about the value of decentralized finance and whether it could come to New Jersey in the near future. Presently, licensed platforms operate with fiat currency. However, as cryptocurrency becomes more popular as a form of payment in the industries like fintech, surely it is only a matter of time before it is used in New Jersey. After all, it offers clear advantages with faster payouts, lower transaction fees, and the removal of intermediaries. Although New Jersey operators don’t offer the service to accept crypto payments directly, some leverage crypto-to-fiat exchanges to indirectly fund accounts, highlighting demand that already exists.

The Future: Blockchain Integration and Crypto Adoption

Looking ahead, the integration of blockchain technology could transform the iGaming experience in New Jersey. Already we have seen the New Jersey Innovation & Technology Authority (NJITA) create a program to connect the tech community and policymakers to ensure that technology has a future in the state. However, when it comes to the iGaming sector, it could be different. David Rebuck, now retired as director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, said that he would prefer to wait and see how cryptocurrency develops regarding the sector and that the US can sit on the sidelines. As trust in the industry grows, though, integrating the two industries seems more likely than not. Web3 technologies have the power to increase transparency, for example, and as Rebuck says, if the technologies are integrated successfully in offshore operations, the likelihood of use in the US increases.

New Jersey has been proven to be forward-thinking regarding iGaming, fostering innovation and development. Whether this mindset will lend itself to the adoption of crypto and blockchain remains to be seen, but the picture will become clearer in the coming years.
