Rapper Nelly’s X Account Hacked In Suspected Crypto Phishing Scam

By Lipika Deka | Edited By Sahana Kiran,October 19, 2023, 7:30 AM

Popular American rapper Nelly is the latest celebrity whose official X handle has been compromised by a hacker. After taking control of the account, the malicious attacker engages in social engineering attacks and entices unsuspecting users to a malicious crypto-phishing site. Leading on-chain investigator ZachXBT promptly detected the breach and raised the alarm regarding the nefarious activities.

Upon delving deeper, it was found that the hacker not only manipulated Nelly’s profile but also impersonated a security analyst affiliated with “Scam Sniffer,” a web-based security solution. The bio was changed to, “On-chain security analyst. Helping you catch scammers @realscamsniffer.” However, the account, as well as the fabricated profile, have since been removed, displaying a message stating that the account no longer exists.

The hacker also attempted to send deceptive messages to unsuspecting recipients. These messages falsely claimed to be investigating compromised wallet approvals on the recipients’ addresses, aiming to deceive users into signing malicious transactions and stealing their funds.

Scam Sniffer, a reputable online security platform, corroborated ZachXBT’s findings, issuing a warning about Nelly’s compromised account. In a statement on X, Scam Sniffer confirmed the situation, urging users to exercise caution and ensure they visit the official website, scamsniffer.io, to verify the authenticity of their interactions.

Not long ago, Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire technology investor Mark Cuban fell victim to phishing scams, losing some $870,000 worth of tokens after likely clicking on a scammer’s link after “months of inactivity.” Cuban’s wallet was drained of U.S.-pegged stablecoins, staked ETH [stETH], SuperRare [RARE] tokens, and some Ethereum Name Service [ENS] domains, according to blockchain data.

Nelly Not Yet Responded, Incident A Grim Reminder

In phishing attacks, hackers trick users into disclosing sensitive data, downloading malware, and exposing their private information. it is therefore imperative for users to take proactive steps like checking the source of requests on a crypto wallet and while downloading a new application.

At the time of writing this piece, Nelly had not responded to the security breach. As the incident unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder for individuals to remain vigilant against online scams and phishing attempts, especially in the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency-related fraud.
