Opera released its latest iOS web browser today. It supports Web-3 across three major platforms, including iOS, Android, and PC. Most importantly, it includes a built-in cryptocurrency wallet.
The browser developer from Norway said that, like the Android version, the new iOS browser enables users to interact smoothly with decentralized applications deployed on the Ethereum blockchain and it supports every ERC-20 tokens, stablecoins, and non-fungible coins.
“We believe that all modern browsers should integrate a crypto wallet,” according to Charles Hamel, ’Opera’s head of crypto “This will enable new business models to emerge on the web.”
The initial tests for the new browser got started about three months ago under the name Opera Touch, in March. The company also announced that support for the Tron blockchain would be available soon.
So what is the Web 3 we hear you ask? It’s a generic term which seeks to bring together a set of rising technologies that include blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and decentralized networks. Those new resources will extend the web’s power far beyond we use today. They will, eventually, allow for P2P payments between users and users and websites.
The decentralized web is the thing of tomorrow, so it makes sense to make available to users an interface to it as early as today.
Web 3 is still far from mainstream adoption, and it has many obstacles to overcome. The obstacles range from the user’s lack of education on the new technologies, which begets fear of new technologies and change, to authentic difficulties in getting ahold of digital assets and sophisticated installation methods.
But progress is happening quickly. Opera entered the crypto verse less than a year ago. Since then, it’s been able to harness the power of cryptocurrencies and Web 3 so that Opera’s new browsers remove the friction between the current and the new.
Marble.Cards
Opera partnered with a decentralized application known as Marble. Cards. The dApp turns web pages into collectible digital cards. Every URL can be transformed into a card once (and once only). Which means that every card is unique.
Moreover, each card is a non-fungible token in the Ethereum blockchain. So, if you find an exciting URL nobody knows about yet, and turn it into a Marble card, you can use it to play, trade or sell it as you wish in the Ethereum network. You can also buy the cards other users have produced.
The feature will be available as a built-in share feature in the browser, and you can find it in the dApp explorer included in the browser’s speed dial.
Opera has seen the writing on the wall. Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are here to stay. While mainstream adoption is still not very close at hand, those who arrive the earliest at the party will be better off than the rest. And Opera is quite early, as standard browsers go.
