Today, Ripple, the blockchain solutions giant, announced a substantial $25 million contribution to the federal super political action committee (PAC) Fairshake. This marks the firm’s second consecutive year of making such a donation, adding to last year’s identical $25 million contribution. The move underscores the firm’s commitment to bolstering pro-crypto political candidates during the critical 2024 U.S. elections.
Ripple stated on Wednesday,
“The Securities and Exchange Commission’s approach of trying to regulate crypto by enforcement has failed. The time for the U.S. to act is now. Ripple is proud to invest in this effort and contribute to shaping a positive regulatory landscape in the U.S.”
Ripple emphasized that the upcoming 2024 elections are poised to be the “most consequential” in the history of cryptocurrency, with significant implications for future financial and technological advancements. The firm’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, underscored the urgency of their involvement, stating,
“Ripple will not — and the crypto industry should not — keep quiet while unelected regulators actively seek to impede innovation and economic growth that millions of Americans utilize. The crypto industry intends to remain heavily invested in this effort until we see meaningful change.”
This proactive stance by Ripple comes amid its ongoing legal battle with the SEC, which has accused the company of raising $1.3 billion through the sale of XRP, deemed an unregistered security by the agency.
Ripple’s Political Ripple Effect: Shaping Crypto Advocacy Landscape
The donation to Fairshake is not just a financial move but a strategic one aimed at influencing the political landscape. Cryptocurrency has emerged as a pivotal issue in the upcoming U.S. election, with the industry advocating for a more supportive regulatory environment. Notably, former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has shown a positive stance towards crypto, recently starting to accept campaign donations in digital currencies. U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., has also voiced strong support, working to form a pro-crypto coalition within Congress.
A recent poll by DCG indicated that over one-fifth of voters in swing states like Michigan, Ohio, and Montana are keenly attentive to candidates’ positions on cryptocurrency. Ripple’s substantial contributions to Fairshake signal a determined effort to ensure that pro-crypto voices have a significant impact on the upcoming elections, potentially shaping the future of the digital economy.
