Solana has seen a spike in network activity in recent weeks, exposing some underlying issues during high loads. The surge revealed that spam transactions involving numerous fake requests could be exploited by network participants without facing any consequences.
Crypto analyst MartyPary tweeted about a serious RPC networking issue on Solana caused by extreme loads. He stated that by sending spam transactions, some participants can block others from accessing the chain. As a result, certain users had full access, while others faced failures, explaining the recent disruptions.
The problem lies in the QUIC implementation of the RPC networking layer, where participants flood RPCs with transactions, overwhelming genuine user requests. QUIC, introduced by Google in 2012, aims to enhance network communication speed.
However, the protocol and its developer community have promptly identified solutions to mitigate such spamming behaviour. MartyPary emphasized the importance of stress-testing software under real loads to identify and address edge cases.
In a notable update, Solana validator builder Anza, a blockchain-based devshop, provided insights into the progress made in resolving the network issues. Fixes are underway, reflecting the platform and its community’s proactive approach to prepare for a potential scenario with billions of users.
Solana Network Under Pressure
Austin Federa, the Head of Strategy at The Solana Foundation, recently announced that the Solana network is experiencing a significant surge in traffic. To address this situation, he stated that bug fixes will be implemented over the next week, with the expectation that performance will gradually improve.
Federa acknowledged that there is no immediate solution, and the work is ongoing. As the demand for the Solana network continues to increase, further efforts will be required to scale up the systems to meet this growing demand.
He stressed that growth is ongoing, not a single event. Applying the needed corrections might need time. Federa complimented the varied group of main contributors, applauding their ability to tackle problems. Importantly, he mentioned the present user rate could have swamped the Solana Network of 2022.
