SpaceX Contract Drives $4.16 Billion US Space Force Satellite Expansion Deal

What to know:

  • The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX with a $4.16 billion contract to develop new satellites as part of the SB-AMTI program.
  • The system combines advanced space technology into a single platform for real-time tracking of threats from space before 2028.
  • In addition, the Golden Dome initiative is driving SpaceX to expand further, along with an $185B projected cost and a new $2.29 billion deal.

SpaceX Contract

The SpaceX Contract secured by the U.S. Space Force marks a major expansion in America’s space-based defense infrastructure. SpaceX secured a lucrative $4.16 billion deal to develop a cutting-edge space-based satellite constellation to track airborne threats in orbit.

The contract covers development of the Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program, an advanced satellite architecture designed to improve the detection and monitoring of airborne targets. The system will integrate space-based sensors, secure communications networks, and ground processing infrastructure to enhance coordination between military and government agencies.

The development was highlighted in a post shared by Crypto News Hunters on X, drawing attention to one of the largest recent defense-related awards involving SpaceX.

SpaceX Contract Drives SB-AMTI Satellite Development Strategy

As mentioned previously, the latest SpaceX Contract includes developing the SB-AMTI Program. It consists of creating the Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator system. The program involves using different layers of satellites, connecting them into a network to process information, allowing quick communication among military officials.

The main purpose of the program is to improve the ability of military and other governmental organizations to identify threats from the air. With the help of the SB-AMTI program, the satellite constellation will be able to detect and monitor different airborne threats, such as fighter jets. Also, the Space Force stated that it expects the project to yield a constellation of satellites capable of detecting and identifying the threat by 2028.

Golden Dome Initiative Drives Space-Based Defense Expansion

Furthermore, the satellite constellation should also support the Golden Dome missile defense initiative by the Trump administration. The program seeks to expand existing missile defense infrastructure through additional sensors, command systems, and space-based capabilities designed to detect and track emerging threats more effectively.

However, there are still several vendors participating in the development of the SB-AMTI satellite constellation besides SpaceX. Therefore, the Space Force expects additional deals to be awarded within the next few months. In fact, the Space Force has just issued a new $2.29 billion deal for a communications satellite project.

Overall, the SpaceX Contract comes as a result of the growing interest in space-based technologies for protecting America’s interests in orbit. Moreover, the budget needed for the Golden Dome missile defense initiative now amounts to about $185 billion.
