US Military Explores Bitcoin for National Security and Cyber Power

A top US military commander has suggested that Bitcoin could play a role in America’s national security strategy.

This idea is being discussed in Congress as the US military looks at how Bitcoin might be used as a tool for cybersecurity and digital warfare. Officials say it is not about using Bitcoin as money for now, but as a technology with strategic value.

A senior US commander, Admiral Samuel Paparo, told lawmakers that BTC could help the United States in cyber defense and global competition. He described BTC as a “power projection” tool that could strengthen US influence in digital systems.

He explained that the military is studying BTC mainly as a computer science system, not as a currency. The focus is on its cryptography and proof-of-work design, which could help secure networks.

Why the Military is Considering Bitcoin

Military experts believe BTC has features that may be useful beyond finance. Its decentralized design and energy-based proof-of-work system are seen as potential tools in cyber defense. Reports also suggest that the US military is running technical tests involving BTC’s network.

This includes observing how the system works and studying its security design. The military is exploring whether these features can support national defense strategies. This is not the first time the US has looked at BTC. Over the years, intelligence and defense agencies have studied it mainly because of its use in sanctions evasion and illegal financing.

Later research expanded to include both risks and opportunities. Some reports suggested that countries like Iran and North Korea used crypto to avoid sanctions, while others saw blockchain as useful for logistics and communication.

The US military’s interest in BTC shows how digital assets are moving beyond finance into global security discussions. However, it is still unclear whether Bitcoin will become a real military tool or remain a research subject.
