The suit accuses them of allowing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E) access to sensitive government data without proper authorization. The lawsuit claims this decision violates privacy protections and lacks the necessary security measures.
The states, led by Democratic attorneys general from New York and California, argue that Trump and Bessent allowed Musk’s team unlimited access to the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Services (BFS). This department is tasked to manage federal payments like Social Security and Medicare funds. The lawsuit argues that no public announcement or explanation was made to support the decision to grant this access.
Attorney General Letitia James of New York, who leads the legal charge, expressed concerns about the administration’s actions. She emphasized that the President cannot share private information without proper oversight or authorization. The states demand that the court issue a restraining order to prevent D.O.GE from further access to the Treasury data.
