Altseason Breakout: Powerful Signal as BTC Below 60% Mark

Glassnode's Altcoin Cycle Signal flipped to altseason at 81.25 as Bitcoin dominance stalled at 59.7% below 60%. With crypto market cap reclaiming $3 trillion and altcoin cap hitting $1.19 trillion, ETF inflows hit yearly highs, signaling broad rotation beyond Bitcoin.

Altseason debate revived as Bitcoin reclaimed over $86k on September 22, 2026, when Glassnode’s Altcoin Cycle Signal hit 81.25 on its normalized 0-100 scale, with seven-day smoothed altseason readings flashing bullish and signaling clear capital rotation from Bitcoin into altcoins.

The move in the altcoin market coincided with total crypto market capitalization clearing $3 trillion and sustained a month-long run without Bitcoin giving up 60 percent of market dominance. The significance of the signal is in the breadth it represents.

Glassnode posted to X that in August rally altcoins held through the rally, whereas today’s rally has kickstarted the entire breadth of altcoin market capitalization. The combined altcoin market cap hit $1.19 trillion, its highest level since late January, an increase of 33 percent in the morning hours of August 19 following actions by the US Treasury refreaked bond markets.

How Glassnode Defines The Regime Flip

The Altcoin Cycle Signal compares the growth in market capitalization of the 250 largest cryptocurrencies, other than stablecoins, to Bitcoin.

Relative altcoin outperformance puts the implication in altseason. For the seven-day mean, noise is eliminated and regime change is distinguished from intraday outperformance. The latest calculation has flipped from a Bitcoin season to an altcoin season.

Altcoins

September’s crypto rally has coincided with Bitcoin recovering from around $75,972 on September 18 to an intraday high of $87,359 on September 22. The broader move has also included gains across major altcoins, with Ethereum trading near $2,750, XRP up more than 6%, Solana gaining about 5%, and Dogecoin rising more than 12% in a September 21 market snapshot.

Why is Bitcoin Dominance less than 60 Percent Important

Bitcoin dominance, or BTC as a proportion of total crypto market capitalization, continues to linger in the range: as of Sept. 22, its dominance stood at 59.7% compared with 59.2% on Aug. 19, even as Bitcoin was in rally mode.

At 66% back in June 2025, that was a macro potential top for dominance, which trader Matthew Hyland said may have been driven by Bitcoin investors who don’t want to miss out on the altcoin run so they take stasis.

10% Persistence less than 60%, means that new money is being allocated more evenly. Other models that need 75% of the top assets to outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day period are still in the mid-40% to low-60% zone, which means confirmation has not been achieved.

Data from Glassnode derivatives platform shows that altcoin futures open interest remains 10-15% below similar periods that saw the market enter a crowded trade, so near-term liquidation risk is lower, but the leverage needed for a sustained alt season hasn’t yet materialized.

ETF Flows Provide Institutional Context

Institutional flows add important context. On September 22, US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $999M of inflows with Ether ETFs tracking just behind at $270M representing the best daily figures for both since October 2025 based on Farside Investors.

Bitcoin

The aggregate cost basis for Bitcoin ETFs was just under $86,000, which is where BTC is trying to find support. The takeaway for market participants varies. Investors and funds traders are seeing alt season cycles flip risk-reward profile favoring beta assets outside of Bitcoin.

Liquidity Shifts Accelerate

Exchanges and market makers are seeing volume flow out of Bitcoin toward Ethereum, Solana, and alternative layer 1s, impacting liquidity and fee structure at derivatives and centralized exchanges.

Ecosystem builders and developers are seeing broad market rallies increase funding and on-chain activity. There are risks, such as false rotations if dominance comes back. Whether that signal turns into a longer term trend will depend on which way dominance goes and whether altcoin market cap holds over $1.19T and ETF flows stay stable across Bitcoin and Ethereum products.
