Binance has confirmed that two of its employees who were apprehended by UAE authorities have been exonerated and set free following questioning concerning the movement of funds from third parties.

Binance Employees Questioned by UAE Authorities

This information was revealed on August 20 following an article published by The New York Times stating that some of the exchange employees have been apprehended in recent weeks at airports in the UAE.

Subsequently, according to Reuters, Binance revealed that only a few of its employees had made statements in what was referred to by Binance as a “routine inquiry.” In response, Binance stated that the inquiry was in connection with third-party funds that passed through a Binance client funds account. The employees, as reported by the exchange, were not under any form of investigation and were subsequently freed.

Details of Transactions Remain Unknown

None of the transaction details involved in the case have been publicly released. The authorities of the UAE have not revealed the parties behind the transactions, their recipients, or any crimes committed.

No charges have been filed against the Binance staff. The claims by the firm that the staff was exonerated have also not been corroborated by police or court documents.

Client money accounts are typically created to ensure that client funds remain distinct from the firm’s operational funds. Client money accounts may include financial institutions, payment processors, corporate clients, and other intermediaries.

The flow of third-party funds in these accounts does not necessarily imply illegal actions.

The Exchange Cooperating With UAE Authorities

The exchange has stated that it is cooperating with Dubai Police and authorities from other Emirates while they investigate the situation.

In addition, the exchange has confirmed that it is trying to set up a procedure to deal with such requests related to crypto payments and institutional funds.

Unfortunately, the exchange has not revealed any details regarding the account, the amount of funds that are being reviewed, or the time for which the employees have been in custody.

The research has revealed no change in Binance’s regulatory status in Dubai as a result of the inquiry.

Binance FZE is listed as an active licensed virtual assets provider with the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. The scope of licensing includes exchange, broker-dealer, lending, borrowing, asset management, and investment activities.

The license was issued in April 2024 as the company was expanding its regulated presence in Dubai.

UAE Inquiry Comes Amid Compliance Focus

This is at a time when the exchange is being questioned about its compliance protocols, among them anti-money laundering measures.

Binance had earlier emphasized more staff in its compliance team and improved transaction monitoring as it seeks to comply with various regulations.

The situation in the UAE is completely different from the legal troubles that Binance faced in Nigeria in 2024, where the authorities arrested its officials and initiated criminal cases. One of Binance’s officials named Tigran Gambaryan got released when the prosecution dropped the charges against him.

As far as the case in the UAE is concerned, for now, it seems to be restricted to only inquiries regarding some financial transactions.
