Bitcoin as Treasury: Eric Semler Shares Vision for Institutional Growth

By Usman Zafar | Edited By Ammar Raza,August 3, 2025, 7:28 AM

Bitcoin
  • Eric Semler wants Semler Scientific to become one of the few Bitcoin treasury companies big enough for institutions to invest in.
  • Inspired by Michael Saylor, he adopted a Bitcoin strategy to turn around a stagnant company.
  • Semler is now focused on increasing stock liquidity and building stronger ties with the Bitcoin community.

Semler Scientific Chairman Eric Semler recently interviewed with the Archie Podcast to outline how he’s positioning his business for the future using Bitcoin. Semler has been at the forefront with early bets on undervalued assets, and he explained how he steered his business from medical stagnation to cryptocurrency innovation.

Semler cited Michael Saylor’s success at MicroStrategy as an inspiration. Semler’s visit gave people an unusual behind-the-scenes look at the strategic and philosophical move into BTC-based treasury management.

With the board’s approval, Semler reached out to Saylor through mutual friend Tom Lee. Saylor didn’t hesitate to help, giving him guidance on how to move forward. Semler knew this wouldn’t be a simple pivot.

The company wasn’t known for Bitcoin, but he worked hard to get everyone on board, from the boardroom to the employees. The company’s stock later jumped fourfold, attracting a wave of new investors.

Now Semler is looking at the bigger picture. His aim is to make Semler Scientific one of the few Bitcoin treasury firms that large institutional funds can actually buy. Since many funds can’t directly hold Bitcoin or ETFs, companies like his could fill that gap.

But it’s not easy. To reach that level, the company needs to be big, well-known, and trade at a premium. Liquidity was a major issue; until recently, most of the shares were tightly held. That has started to change, with trading volume increasing and hedge funds taking an interest.

The Road Ahead for Bitcoin Treasury Firms

Semler knows that success won’t come just from holding BTC. He’s focused on building a real presence within the BTC community. Bringing Natalie Brunel onto the board was a step in that direction.

She’s already helped strengthen the firm’s reputation among BTTC supporters. At the same time, Semler is counting on the company’s upcoming healthcare product to balance things out. If BTC faces a downturn, a successful product launch could offer a buffer.

Looking forward, Semler hinted at plans to follow in Saylor’s footsteps even more closely. With growing demand, stronger liquidity, and a firm position in both health tech and BTC, he believes Semler Scientific is on the right track to becoming a rare and valuable player in the market.
