Crypto markets are losing an important source of demand as investment flows weaken, according to Wintermute. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $678.9 million in net outflows last week, while spot Ether ETFs lost $542.2 million. Bitcoin fell 3.2% over the week, compared with a 7% decline for Ether, highlighting pressure across major digital assets.
Bitcoin ETF Outflows Reach Their Highest Weekly Level Since June
Wintermute said Bitcoin’s outflows were the largest weekly total since late June, weakening the capital-flow support that had helped the market. The withdrawals suggest that some investors are reducing exposure rather than adding to positions during the latest price decline. However, ETF outflows alone do not establish that all institutional investors are bearish or that selling will continue.
Data from Farside Investors’ Bitcoin ETF flow tracker and Ether ETF flow tracker provides a way to monitor whether demand returns. Sustained net inflows would indicate that more capital is entering these funds than leaving them. Until that happens, Wintermute sees less support for a durable recovery in crypto prices.

Treasury Yields Add Pressure to Bitcoin and Ether Prices
Wintermute linked crypto’s outlook to long-term U.S. Treasury yields, which influence the relative appeal of riskier investments. When yields rise, investors can earn more from government debt, potentially reducing their willingness to hold volatile assets such as cryptocurrencies. Higher borrowing costs and tighter financial conditions can also weigh on speculative market positions.
The firm identified the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield crossing 5.64% as a level that would make it more cautious. It also highlighted Bitcoin’s repeated inability to break above $82,500 as a warning sign. These are Wintermute’s stated risk thresholds, not guaranteed price triggers, and market direction will also depend on broader economic conditions and investor demand.
Bitcoin’s $82,600 Level Becomes a Key Market Test
Bitcoin’s recent performance shows why Wintermute is watching price action alongside ETF flows. Market data on October 13 placed BTC around $79,377, following a weekly decline of roughly 3.5%, while Ether’s losses were steeper. The difference suggests that selling pressure has been more pronounced in Ether, although a single week cannot establish a lasting trend.

A sustained move above $82,600 would not automatically confirm a recovery, but repeated failures to hold above that level could reinforce concerns about weak demand. Investors will need to assess whether any rebound is accompanied by stronger spot-market activity and renewed ETF inflows. Without those signals, a price bounce may prove temporary rather than the start of a broader uptrend.
Wintermute Urges Caution on Altcoin Rallies Amid Outflows
Wintermute remains constructive on crypto over the longer term but recommends caution toward rallies in lower-quality altcoins while capital flows remain weak.
When Bitcoin and Ether ETFs are recording substantial withdrawals, smaller tokens may struggle to attract sustained demand, particularly during periods of tighter financial conditions. Short-lived rallies should therefore be distinguished from moves supported by stronger liquidity and lasting investor participation.
The next signals to watch are the direction of long-term Treasury yields, daily ETF flow data and Bitcoin’s ability to establish a sustained move above Wintermute’s cited threshold.
A return to positive fund flows alongside stabilizing yields would improve the case for recovery, though it would not guarantee further gains. Until conditions improve, Wintermute’s outlook points to continued volatility and selective risk-taking across crypto markets.
