In a bid to tackle the long-standing issue of invalid or “cursed” inscriptions within the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol, developers have unveiled a new upgrade that aims to resolve over 71,000 such inscriptions, allowing them to be traded freely.
This groundbreaking development was announced on June 4 by Raphjaph, a prominent developer involved in the project.
The latest protocol version, ord 0.6.0, implements the initial steps toward recognizing and categorizing cursed inscriptions.
Notable additions include the ability to authenticate to Bitcoin using usernames and passwords, the introduction of a sample configuration file, and the option to pass in RPC credentials through various methods, such as command-line flags or environmental variables.
The official GitHub repository for the project provides detailed documentation of the changes implemented in this upgrade. These include unbinding inscriptions from zero-sat transactions, refining documentation related to inscriptions made on the first sat of input, and updating the bitcoind RPC authentication options.
Raphjaph further mentioned in a tweet that the ordinals.com website would soon be updated to reflect these changes, ensuring users are well-informed about the recent developments.
Bitcoin Ordinals Protocol Supports Protocol Extensions
Another developer, going by the Twitter name “Ordinally,” expressed excitement over the successful release of ord v0.6.0, which is a significant step forward in realizing their vision for a dynamic and adaptable Ordinals protocol.
The main focus of this upgrade was to lay the groundwork for a novel concept known as “cursed inscriptions.” These inscriptions allow for protocol extensions without altering existing inscription numbers, striking a balance between innovation and backward compatibility.
The initial release of the upgrade supports only a subset of cursed inscriptions, as the development team takes an incremental approach to ensure the ecosystem can adapt and grow alongside the protocol.

It should be noted that existing positive inscriptions will remain unaffected, with no changes to their numbers. However, negative numbers associated with cursed inscriptions will evolve over time as more types are introduced.
Activation of new inscriptions will occur at a future block height, after which previously cursed inscriptions will be considered blessed. The specific activation mechanism is yet to be implemented, but negative numbers before the activation height will remain negative.
