CME Group Records $469.5 Billion in Crypto Trading
According to CME Group’s Q3 cryptocurrency report, the exchange recorded approximately $469.5 billion in total crypto derivatives notional volume during the quarter. Average daily volume reached 195,800 contracts, while average daily open interest stood at 197,400 contracts. These figures indicate substantial activity in the exchange’s crypto futures and options markets.

Bitcoin derivatives accounted for $326.7 billion of the quarterly total, while Ether derivatives contributed $118.8 billion. Together, the two asset classes represented roughly 95% of the reported volume. CME also recorded activity in Solana, XRP, Stellar, Sui, Chainlink, Avalanche and Cardano products, indicating that its regulated derivatives offering extends beyond the two largest cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin and Ether Lead CME’s Institutional Derivatives Market
Bitcoin products averaged 115,900 contracts daily, compared with 70,300 for Ether. Solana products averaged 6,500 contracts, while XRP products averaged 12,200 contracts per day. The figures show that Bitcoin and Ether remain the dominant assets for derivatives activity on CME, even as the exchange expands its coverage of other cryptocurrencies.
Derivatives allow traders to hedge positions, manage portfolio risk or take directional exposure without necessarily holding the underlying tokens. This makes them relevant to institutions that require established trading and clearing infrastructure. However, higher derivatives volume does not automatically mean investors are buying cryptocurrencies or that prices will rise, since futures and options can be used for both bullish and bearish strategies.
CME’s 24/7 Crypto Trading Sets a New Volume Record
CME’s quarterly report also highlighted a record weekend for its round-the-clock cryptocurrency trading, as the market moved higher between August 21 and 23. Traders exchanged 69,600 contracts during that period, representing approximately $554.7 million in notional volume. The activity illustrates demand for access to regulated crypto derivatives beyond traditional weekday trading hours.
Continuous trading matters because cryptocurrency markets operate around the clock, including weekends when significant price moves can occur. Access to derivatives during those periods can help participants adjust exposure without waiting for conventional market sessions to reopen. Still, weekend trading activity alone does not establish whether institutional demand is increasing over the longer term.
Record CME Revenue Reflects Broader Market Activity
CME Group’s crypto trading figures arrived alongside strong overall financial results. In its October 21 earnings release, the exchange operator reported third-quarter revenue of approximately $1.74 billion, up about 13% year over year, and net income of roughly $1.04 billion. Average daily volume across all asset classes reached a quarterly record of 29.4 million contracts.
The wider results show that the crypto business operates within a much larger derivatives marketplace serving interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy and other assets.
CME’s crypto volumes therefore provide one measure of demand for regulated cryptocurrency risk-management tools, rather than a complete picture of the market. Investors will be watching subsequent quarterly figures to see whether crypto derivatives activity and open interest continue growing as institutional participation develops.
