New Study Confirms Ripple Custody Supports $HBAR in Shared MPC Wallet

Key Takeaways:

  • Academic paper confirms Ripple Custody now supports Hedera assets using a shared MPC custody model.
  • Integration includes DeRec, enabling decentralized recovery without seed phrases.
  • The wallet design targets institutional compliance across XRPL, Ethereum, and Hedera.

The Future Internet journal has now formally published a paper that, for the very first time in academia, confirms Ripple Custody’s support for Hedera Hashgraph.

The report presents a wallet model for regulated entities holding multi-chain digital assets, such as XRP and HBAR. This confirmation places Ripple Custody at the forefront of cross-chain digital asset management with the support provided by its coverage of Hedera-based tokens using a shared-custody model.

The model’s strength lies in its integration of Multi-Party Computation (MPC) and Threshold Signature Schemes (TSS). Rather than depending on full key control, key shards are dispersed to the client, wealth manager, and custody provider.

This allows for a hedge fund to manage assets both on XRPL and Hedera under security and regulatory compliance. It also has stringent controls such as whitelists for transactions and role authorizations, presenting an institution-grade setup.

The core of the paper is formed by DeRec, a decentralized key recovery protocol eliminating the conventional seed phrase, utilizing helper nodes and pre-established rules to govern recovery. Ripple, Hedera, and Algorand are among the founding members of the DeRec Alliance, indicating strong ecosystem alignment.

Meet the Minds: Authors Behind the Integration

The article was co-authored by prominent researchers well entrenched within both the Ripple and the Hedera ecosystems. Dr. Paolo Tasca, founder of UCL’s Centre for Blockchain Technologies and executive at the Exponential Science Foundation, bridges academia with Ripple’s advisory branch and Hedera’s governance background. His experience in cross-chain policies informs a compliance wallet infrastructure addressing regulated markets.

Yimika Erinle of the Exponential Science Foundation is working in the area of custody frameworks and cross-protocol design, bridging Ripple’s infrastructure to Hedera via neutral, standards-based research.

In addition, UCL cryptographer Yebo Feng and DeFi economist Jiahua Xu contribute to both the MPC backbone and compliance incentives. UCL’s deputy director, Nikhil Vadgama, further anchors the wallet’s technical governance in Hedera.

The engagement of these entities provides institutional weight, indicative of real-world implementation and not theoretical aspiration. UCL and the Exponential Science Foundation both have well-established relationships with Ripple and Hedera, assisting in shaping business-ready blockchain frameworks.

Ripple’s Custody System Sets New Standard

This is not merely an intellectual proposal, but it is an adoptable institutional model. Wallet infrastructure accommodates tokenized property, on-chain credit, and compliant digital bonds on XRPL, Ethereum, and Hedera.

Its integration with DeRec makes it unique among legacy custody infrastructure, with secure, recoverable access without the reliance of centralized infrastructure.

By integrating Ripple Custody with Hedera, this study enables interoperability for regulated capital. It provides secure grounds for institutional access to real-world asset tokenization, paving the way for scalable, compliant digital finance.
