North Korea Refutes UN Claims of Obtaining $2 Billion via Crypto Exchanges and Banks

September 2, 2019 by Tabassum Naiz

The latest report reveals that North Korea argued and denied the allegation of stealing $2billion from cryptocurrency exchanges and banks. The country says the United States is spreading rumors’ and fake propaganda.

This came into notice on Sunday wherein North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency published news, highlighting that the United Nations Report is not faithful. Previously, in early August 2019, mainstream media Reuters reported the confidential information shared to United Nations Security Council North Korea which stated that North Korea had netted an estimated $2 billion via hacking banks and cryptocurrency exchanges. It was further reported that;

Capital of North Korea, Pyongyang, continued to enhance its nuclear and missile programs although it did not conduct a nuclear test or ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) launch.”

North Korea Denies UN Report

Although, request to comment on the same report wasn’t being heard in last month, very recently KCNA news outlet shared a statement of the National Coordination Committee of the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing Terrorism. The Committee’s spokesperson said the UN report was “fabricated,” “downright lie” and a “pretext.” In his words;

“Such a fabrication by the hostile forces is nothing but a sort of a nasty game aimed at tarnishing the image of our Republic and finding justification for sanctions and pressure campaign against the DPRK,”

The spokesperson further said that the propagandists believe if one lies 100 times, then others will probably assume it as a fact. On a continuous fuming note, he says, “we will never tolerate any act that thoughtlessly slanders the dignity of our country.”

It’s worth noting that in mid-August, United Nations was reportedly investigating 35 North Korean cyberattacks across 17 countries. Monero cryptocurrency, as a privacy-focused coin often appears on top bulletins with the North Korean hackers. This is because the UN analyzed malware that designed to mine privacy-coins Monero, which will later send the proceeds to servers situated in Pyongyang university.

As far as the attack on Banks and crypto exchange is concerned, UN experts mentioned that the attack would allow the country to generate income to fund its nuclear weapons program.
