Quantum Encryption: France Faces Tough 2030 Deadline

France has disclosed a communication about new certification guidelines that make it mandatory for approved products to use only quantum encryption resistant to quantum attacks. If introduced gradually, it might really change digital security standards. The regulators will cease issuing certifications for non-QR encryption from the year 2027 and will completely enforce the use of QR encryption by the year 2030.

This new policy for the crypto and blockchain industry not only sets a compliance deadline but also challenges the capacity of existing infrastructures to meet the requirements of post-quantum cryptography.

Policy Timeline and Certification Shift

The French directive has set a certain time after which a change would be necessary. Starting 2027, products without quantum encryption will not be eligible for certification any longer, which means they will be almost Sure absent from regulated purchases and major business uses.

By 2030, complete conformity with quantum encryption is needed for all certified systems. With this stepwise method, the French authorities intend to allow manufacturers and users to switch to quantum-resistant cryptographic libraries at their own pace and without causing major inconvenience to the services.

Implications for Crypto Infrastructure

Networks that use blockchain, custody solutions, and exchanges mostly rely on elliptic-curve and RSA cryptography, which are susceptible to being broken by quantum computers in the future. By taking action, France is increasing the pressure on institutions to adopt quantum encryption and switch to completely new algorithms that will resist quantum attacks, for example, for safeguarding wallets, signing transactions for consensus, and managing cryptographic keys.
