- The new Shib Alpha Layer Bridge introduces a Layer 3 that assigns TREAT as its exclusive gas token.
- BONE remains the core utility for all operations on Shibarium Layer 2, with no changes to its role.
- The ecosystem shift enhances modularity, scaling, and developer freedom without altering BONE’s foundation.
The Shiba Inu system has introduced a major structural improvement through the Shib Alpha Layer Bridge. The new bridge connects Shibarium’s Layer 2 to a Layer 3 system named the Shib Alpha Layer, which focuses first and foremost on efficiency and scalable throughput.
The update specifically defines distinct technical roles for the two tokens of the ecosystem, BONE and TREAT, without filling any current positions.
BONE remains the only gas token for Shibarium’s Layer 2. TREAT, the new token, thus becomes the gas token for all transactions made on the Alpha Layer.
This Layer 3 entrance enables intensive building without raising fees or shifting the burden to the users. Instead, it opens a simplified dApps and microservices environment, powered by the adoption of the OP Stack rollups and Elderjs frameworks.
This new design shows a stratified yet cohesive system where the individual elements support each other. Though not merging the boundaries of functionality, the upgrade simplifies the system, giving TREAT a working role while consolidating the dominance of BONE.

BONE Remains Core to Shibarium Despite Alpha Layer Launch
The community first expressed concerns about BONE losing significance with the rise of the Alpha Layer. But the development team had a clear response. Optimization for BONE isn’t through redefinition, but through reinforcement.
As more and more layers, platforms, and applications are built on the Shiba Inu chain, they continue to place and land on Shibarium, and all of them use BONE.
The BONE role hasn’t changed, while use could increase as the network scale grows. Those building on the Alpha Layer still need to process operations on Shibarium. Inter-layer reliance increases the need for BONE without a need for a distinct update to functionality.
Shiba Inu member Lucie remarked upon continuing growth beneath the surface. Games, decentralized platforms, and social utilities are slowly increasing their presence on Shibarium. Though silent now, a build-up is happening toward a larger wave of rollouts, all depending on BONE at the core of the network.
Shiba Inu’s Alpha Layer Puts TREAT at the Center of Layer 3 Activity
For TREAT, the Shib Alpha Layer delivers a functional breakthrough. Formerly regarded as a reserve token, it now powers internal transactions for Layer 3. All interactions within the Alpha Layer, ranging from dApp access to minuscule peer-to-peer transactions, are powered by TREAT.
This real-time tool fosters ongoing need and forces TREAT to the operational center stage. By separating TREAT from Shibarium’s gas sheet, programmers avoid fee duplication, users see improved functionality, and token taxes stay streamlined.
