Exa is tokenizing Brazil's surplus clean energy on Solana, launching a peer-to-peer marketplace in a $200 billion market where 40GW of solar faces 20% curtailment and $1.2B losses. The Solana Energy push expands real-world assets and DePIN infrastructure in LatAm.

Solana Energy is bringing Brazil’s clean energy bounty on-chain as marketplace startup Exa moves its excess renewable electricity to Solana, rolling out a platform that tokenizes surplus clean power and connects power plants directly with end users seeking cheaper energy. The announcement from Solana is the latest example of an on-chain real-world asset expansion for the blockchain network, this time focused on the energy market in Latin America’s largest economy.

Brazilian Excess Clean Power Gets Tokenized

Solana Energy-powered Exa targets a market inefficiency in Brazil’s $200 billion electricity market. Despite producing more renewable power than its grid can use, retail consumers pay elevated costs due to intermediaries in power distribution. Exa’s peer-to-peer marketplace matches consumers with excess renewable power by creating tokenized representations of clean power on Solana for end customers.

The marketplace intends to allow all market participants to buy and sell directly to each other, reducing procurement costs and increasing access to renewable energy that has been confirmed by a third-party verification system. The Solana Energy solution takes advantage of Solana’s ability to support high-volume, low-cost settlements that can handle the high granularity and speed needed for minute-by-minute energy consumption settlements.

Why Brazil Is the Ideal Testbed for Solana Energy Infrastructure

Brazil presents a compelling case for Solana Energy RWA tokenization. Distributed solar capacity exploded from under 1 GW in 2018 to 40 GW in 2025, but growth has outpaced transmission infrastructure. As a result, Brazil curtailed approximately 20% of its solar and wind output in 2025, incurring estimated losses of $1.2 billion.

The US Energy Information Administration notes Brazil as one of the world’s largest renewable producers, with hydropower, wind, and solar comprising a dominant share of its matrix. This curtailment crisis creates stranded energy that can be monetized on-chain.

For Solana, Brazil offers scale and urgency. Tokenization transforms curtailed megawatt-hours into tradable digital assets with transparent origin, addressing both economic waste and corporate sustainability reporting needs.

Solana’s Real-World Asset Strategy and the DePIN Connection

The Exa launch fits within Solana’s broader Real-World Asset push and its strength in DePIN. Solana Energy has positioned itself as infrastructure for tokenized assets beyond stablecoins and treasuries, including energy, per its RWA solutions structure. The third distinction is that Solana Energy tokenization is a real-world DePIN use case because it does not depend on off-chain custodians. This aligns with trends where DePIN networks use Solana for low-cost settlement.

Brazil

For stakeholders, implications are multi-layered. For developers, Solana Energy opens design space for energy applications, automated settlements and ESG verification tools. For investors and institutions, it brings exposure to a yield-bearing, non-correlated asset class tied to real electricity demand. For regulators, Brazil’s evolving energy and digital asset systems will be critical, as peer-to-peer trading challenges traditional utility concessions.

What Comes Next for Tokenized Energy Markets?

The project is early-stage, with key milestones ahead including pilot transactions, generator onboarding, and integration with Brazil’s regulated settlement systems. If successful, the model could expand beyond surplus spot markets into forward contracts, renewable energy certificates, and deeper integration with national grid operators.

More broadly, it tests whether Solana Energy infrastructure can scale from a LatAm pilot to a global template for tokenized electricity markets, turning wasted clean power into liquid, programmable assets for a $200 billion market seeking meaningful efficiency gains.
