Buenos Aires lets citizens pay taxes in cryptocurrency; Details

By Aishwarya shashikumar | Edited By Sahana Kiran,April 27, 2022, 11:01 AM

buenos aires

Horacio Larreta, the chief of the government of Buenos Aires, declared that the city will accept cryptocurrencies for tax payments. The announcement is part of the city of Buenos Aires’ digitization strategy. The effort from Argentina’s capital will strengthen ties between the city and its citizens.

Horacio Rodrguez Larreta, the head of the city administration, verified this during a Zoom conversation. He said,

“The Buenos Aires government decided, among other things, to implement the payment of taxes with cryptocurrencies . “

During the nearly two-year epidemic, Larreta’s government depended on a digital ally to combat the health crisis: Boti, the City’s WhatsApp chatbot, was critical to the entire operation, answering questions regarding vaccine shifts, swabs, and much more.

The GCBA reached out to citizens in a level that had never been seen before through this route. The City’s experience was even praised as an innovative model by the firm managed by Mark Zuckerberg. Not only that, but this programme also allows you to schedule medical appointments, identify authorised parking places, and monitor traffic jams, among other things.

This tends to be associated with the Larreta government’s entire digitization process. The Secretariat of Innovation and Digital Transformation is one of the primary players in this regard.

Buenos Aires+ plan

The futuristic “Buenos Aires+” concept intends to bridge the gap between inhabitants and the city, bringing them closer together. About blockchain, Diego Fernandez, Secretary of Digital Transformation and Innovation said:

“I believe that blockchain technology will give the government the possibility of making all its acts more transparent and encourage the participation of citizens in a deeper way”

One of the Secretariat’s key goals is to establish a “digital identity” platform based on the open-source X-Road platform and powered by blockchain technology in order to increase transparency and provide better services to residents.

Three levels to reach the main objective, according to Fernandez,

  • Digitize the procedures
  • Government only eleven
  • Interoperable

However, the government’s various adaptations and technologies will move slowly at first, but residents will eventually catch up. In March, Rio de Janeiro proposed a similar strategy, suggesting that cryptocurrency be accepted for tax payments.
