The Cardano Foundation has open-sourced Mesmo, a native shared library designed to simplify blockchain development across Python, Go, Rust and JavaScript. The library lets developers access Cardano’s core functionality without requiring a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), potentially reducing integration work for teams building applications on the network.

Cardano Foundation Brings Native Support to 4 Languages

The Cardano Foundation introduced Mesmo as a shared library that allows existing software development kits (SDKs) to access Cardano functionality through a C application programming interface (API).

Developers can call the library using foreign function interfaces (FFI), enabling applications written in different programming languages to use the same underlying implementation. This approach allows teams to retain their existing development environments instead of adopting Java-based tooling.

Mesmo is based on BloxBean’s Cardano Client Lib and compiled using GraalVM Native Image. The C API provides an interface between the native library and applications written in supported languages. The project is currently in early pre-release, with the Python package listed at version 0.1.0rc8, meaning developers should expect further testing and changes before stable releases.

Mesmo Adds Governance, Staking and Payment Functions

The library covers several core Cardano operations, including staking, payments, key generation from seed phrases and address validation. It also supports Conway-era governance functions, such as delegated representative (DRep) registration, voting and treasury transactions.

These capabilities could help developers integrate governance and transaction functionality without independently implementing each operation for their preferred programming language.

Mesmo also includes Blake2b and Ed25519 cryptographic functionality, along with offline Plutus cost estimation. Transactions are modeled declaratively and constructed offline, while the application written in the host language remains responsible for submitting them.

This separation could make it easier for developers to integrate transaction-building functionality into existing applications while retaining control over submission workflows.

Cardano Development Gains From Shared Infrastructure

The shared-library approach addresses a recurring challenge for blockchain developers: maintaining integrations across different programming languages and software environments.

Without a common native interface, development teams may need language-specific implementations or additional runtime dependencies. Mesmo is intended to reduce that duplication by providing a common implementation that multiple SDKs can call.

For developers maintaining Cardano applications, this could simplify updates following protocol changes and hard forks. Instead of requiring every team to implement new functionality separately, a shared library can provide a consistent interface for supported operations. However, the extent of those benefits will depend on language bindings, documentation, compatibility and adoption as the project moves beyond pre-release.

Cardano ADA Falls 7% as Development Continues

Cardano’s native token, ADA, was trading near $0.24 on September 24, according to CoinGecko historical data . The token had closed at approximately $0.2385 on September 23, after reaching $0.2540 on September 22. This indicates that ADA experienced a short-term pullback even as development infrastructure continued to expand.

The market data does not establish a direct relationship between ADA’s price movement and the Mesmo announcement. Instead, it provides context for separating developer infrastructure progress from short-term token performance.

Mesmo’s longer-term relevance will depend on whether developers adopt the library, integrate it into existing SDKs and use it to build applications across Cardano’s ecosystem.
