Coinbase is expanding beyond secondary-market trading by allowing eligible U.S. retail customers to request allocations in initial public offerings directly through its app. The service launches with Oura’s IPO this week, giving the crypto exchange users access to shares at the offering price before public-market trading begins.

Oura IPO Starts Coinbase’s New Retail Allocation Service

Coinbase announced on September 21 that eligible U.S. customers can access a new IPO page within its app and submit conditional offers to buy shares. The first offering available through the service is Oura, which has launched an IPO of 50 million shares with an expected price range of $40 to $44 per share. Oura has applied to list on Nasdaq under the ticker OURA.

The allocation process does not guarantee that every request will be filled. The company says allocations can be full, partial or unavailable depending on customer demand and the number of shares provided by underwriters. Customers can modify or cancel requests during the offer period, while allocated shares become tradable on the trading platform once public-market trading begins.

Coinbase Uses FINRA Broker Dealer for IPO Allocations

The service operates through Coinbase Capital Markets, the company’s FINRA-registered broker-dealer. The entity participates in IPOs as a best-efforts selling-group member and aggregates customer orders before routing them through Apex Clearing Corporation.

The company’s Capital Markets acts as an agent rather than underwriting the offerings or taking the opposite side of customer trades.

The structure also separates the new securities service from the company’s digital-asset business. The crypto exchange says users must complete a standard FINRA eligibility questionnaire, while execution, clearing and custody are handled by Apex.

The company also notes that SIPC protection applies to the securities services provided by the company’s Capital Markets, not to digital assets or cash held through Coinbase Inc.

Coinbase Expands From Crypto Trading Into Primary Markets

The IPO feature is part of the company’s broader effort to build a platform covering multiple financial products. Earlier this year, the company introduced pre-IPO perpetual futures for eligible users outside the U.S., beginning with SpaceX, providing price exposure to private companies before their public listings. Those contracts are derivatives rather than ownership of the underlying companies.

The company has also expanded into traditional stock trading, derivatives and token sales, making the IPO service another step in connecting users with assets across different stages of their market lifecycle.

The distinction between these products matters because IPO allocations provide actual securities, unlike derivatives that only track an underlying asset’s value. The crypto exchange says it plans to offer additional IPO opportunities as selling-group allocations become available.

COIN Stock Rises 11.7% as Coinbase Broadens Access

Coinbase’s expansion comes alongside notable movement in its publicly traded shares. COIN closed at $194.25 on September 18, gaining 11.66% in one session on volume of about 21.7 million shares, according to historical market data. The stock had also risen 5.75% on September 17 after falling 4.42% a day earlier.

The stock performance provides useful market context, but it does not establish that the IPO announcement caused the gains.

The latest initiative potentially gives the crypto exchange another financial-services revenue channel while increasing its role in primary-market access. Its next IPO offerings, customer demand and the number of allocations available will provide clearer evidence of how extensively the service develops.
