In a notable development for the Ethereum (ETH) community, two prominent researchers from the Ethereum Foundation have recently disclosed their advisory roles at EigenLayer. Dankrad Feist revealed his involvement on Monday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), shortly after fellow researcher Justin Drake made a similar announcement the day before.
Both Feist and Drake have not specified the exact timeline of their advisory appointments at EigenLayer. Feist clarified in his post that his role is personal and not representative of the ETH Foundation. Emphasizing his independent stance, Feist stated,
“I am taking this position personally, not representing the Ethereum Foundation, and with a focus on risks and decentralization. I am therefore fully expected to take contrarian views on EigenLayer.”
Feist acknowledged receiving a “significant amount” of Eigen tokens as part of his advisory position but insisted that this compensation would not influence his views on the protocol and its development.
Conflict of Interest Concerns Emerge in Ethereum Community
The announcements have sparked discussions about potential conflicts of interest, especially given the influential roles both researchers play within the Ethereum ecosystem. Crypto trader and influencer Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, highlighted these concerns in a tweet directed at ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Fish questioned the ethical implications of ETH Foundation members receiving substantial compensation from projects built on ETH, which might have conflicting interests with the blockchain’s core values and goals.
Although Buterin did not respond to the query, Drake addressed the issue by stressing the importance of transparency. “I feel the community deserves transparency,” Drake stated in his announcement. To mitigate concerns, Drake pledged to reinvest all advisorship proceeds into Ethereum projects, either as investments or donations.
Feist did not mention a similar commitment in his disclosure. Instead, he outlined the potential risks and benefits associated with restaking, emphasizing a cautious and analytical approach.
The Ethereum community remains watchful as these developments unfold. The Ethereum Foundation and the involved researchers have not yet provided additional comments on the matter. The unfolding scenario underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining integrity and trust within the rapidly evolving landscape of blockchain and decentralized technologies.
