Arthur Hayes’ Maelstrom Crypto Selloff involves $22.28 million in ETH and altcoin sales as economic uncertainty, geopolitical risks, and ETF outflows raise concerns about further market declines.

The Maelstrom crypto selloff has recently received some attention as the founder of Maelstrom, Arthur Hayes, is alleged to have made an investment sale of roughly $22.28 million worth of cryptocurrencies such as ETH, ENA, UNI, and various other altcoins. According to Hayes, the fund had successfully liquidated all of its directional trades due to fears about the economy and geopolitics.

This comes amid the problems faced by the crypto market due to increased oil prices, inflation worries, and fears of rate cuts. Recent withdrawals from spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in the United States have only added fuel to the fire, increasing the worry that prices may fall even more before they bounce back.

Hayes thinks that the market needs another fall before prices can go up. This is also in contrast with his previous bullish forecast for Bitcoin and Ethereum that was made just nine days ago.

Maelstrom Crypto Selloff as Arthur Hayes Exits Crypto Trades

In his latest post on X, Arthur Hayes revealed that the Maelstrom team had sold out all its directional trades and cashed in on several cryptocurrencies. The rationale behind this was the unpredictable nature of the economy and geopolitics at present.

As per on-chain data provided by the Twitter handle of blockchain analytics Lookonchain, the Maelstrom crypto selloff entailed about $22.28 million worth of digital currencies. Out of this, the majority belonged to Ethereum, while ENA and UNI were the other two digital currencies involved.

Transaction reporting also comprised about 6,400 ETH equivalent to $15.2 million, 14 million ENA priced at $2.76 million, and 323,000 UNI estimated at $2.24 million.

Other activities carried out in the portfolio comprised 1.89 million ETHFI worth $1.23 million, 546,609 AERO priced at $398,000, 120,000 PENDLE priced at about $244,000, and 3 million ZAMA priced at $214,000.

Some of the tokens, according to reports, were sold on crypto exchanges like Binance. It is important to note that the transfer of tokens on crypto exchanges does not necessarily mean that all the tokens were sold via these exchange services. The values provided are approximations based on the available on-chain data.

Ethereum made up two-thirds of the value of the reported Maelstrom crypto selloff, while the rest consisted of tokens related to decentralized finance, among others.

Arthur Hayes Says Crypto Price May Need to Fall Further

In explaining his reason, Hayes pointed out that cryptocurrency prices will probably fall further before there will be any possibility for recovery.

“I think we gotta go down to go up,” he explained further, saying he will not move ahead unless there is an “all clear signal.” It seems like Maelstrom is taking a cautious approach until market conditions improve. Instead of putting the money right away in other crypto assets, Hayes says he will wait before making his next move.

It is important to highlight that the Maelstrom crypto selloff occurred after Hayes had stated a positive perspective on Bitcoin and Ethereum nine days ago. This fact shows that under such market uncertainty, the changes in investment behavior happen rather quickly.

Nevertheless, the Maelstrom crypto selloff does not mean that the next market downturn will occur soon. The actions of Hayes show only the individual attitude to risk and cannot be considered a forecast for the whole crypto market.

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF Outflows Add to Selling Pressure

Another essential component of market analysis is the institutional flows. As per a market briefing from October 24, it was noted that there was an outflow of around $635.6 million from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on October 22. In addition to this, there was an outflow of $110.6 million in spot Ethereum ETFs.

The liquidation of over $400 million worth of cryptocurrencies was also noted, suggesting that the leveraged positions were being unwound.

Outflows in ETFs may be an indication of reduced demand for market exposure through such investments, while daily data does not indicate any trends over a longer period of time. The liquidation amounts represent the amount of forced position closings but not the direction that prices will follow next.

These examples illustrate the reason why the Maelstrom crypto selloff became famous. Institutional investment outflows and the closing of leveraged positions could cause pressure on crypto prices.

In any case, the market may find stability once again if ETF money starts flowing back into the market, if economic figures get better, or if geopolitical concerns calm down. This is something that investors will be keeping an eye on.

What the Maelstrom Crypto Selloff Means for the Next Rally

Maelstrom crypto selloff is seen in the prudent attitude of Arthur Hayes in light of growing economic and geopolitical threats. By closing the directional positions, Hayes is awaiting clear market signals to make the next investments.

The sales worth $22.28 million, including $15.2 million in ETH, indicate the shifting attitude of Hayes. However, the actions of one fund do not mean that the cryptocurrency market is declining.

The ETF flows, inflation, oil prices, and Bitcoin and Ethereum changes may give more hints. Low demand might push prices down, whereas favorable trends would allow a comeback.

For now, Hayes remains in a cautious position. The idea about the falling prices needed prior to the further growth refers to his estimation and not the predicted scenario.

Maelstrom crypto selloff demonstrates how fast strategies might change if the risks grow. The comeback of Hayes depends on the future market situation.
