Galaxy Digital has launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative to address threats from quantum computers. The program will fund research, technical development, and expert review. It aims to protect Bitcoin’s cryptographic security before risks become urgent.

According to a report, the company will provide up to $5 million in grants. Developers may use the funding to build post-quantum solutions for Bitcoin. Eligible projects include wallet migration tools, transaction upgrades, and security reviews.

Why Galaxy Formed a Bitcoin Quantum Advisory Council

Galaxy Research will publish studies on quantum risks and possible Bitcoin responses. Reports will detail the ways in which computer technology will influence present cryptography systems and identify the moment at which network changes might be needed.

This initiative comes after a series of actions concerning quantum security in the Bitcoin community. Earlier this month, BitGo implemented services related to institutional custody clients, including quantum risk scoring, safer UTXO management, and migration assistance.

A week ago, Blockstream included post-quantum cryptography in the list of technical priorities. The subject was featured in the second quarter report for 2026, together with Liquid, Lightning, and hardware wallet developments.

It becomes apparent that the focus of attention of the industry has changed from questioning the need for preparation by Bitcoin to identifying safe ways to migrate.

Galaxy established the Quantum Advisory Council, which will oversee the initiative. The advisory council consists of experts in quantum computing and cryptography, who will evaluate proposals and advise in research concerning network resilience.

How Galaxy Plans to Coordinate Bitcoin’s Quantum Upgrade

This activity comes after a series of governmental actions against quantum threats. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued the first set of standards concerning post-quantum cryptography in 2024. It is the responsibility of agencies of the federal government to begin preparations for better defenses.

According to Galaxy, Bitcoin cannot afford to wait till the day quantum computers are capable of breaking its systems. Such significant changes in the protocol will need agreement among all developers, miners, companies, and other parties. This could also take many years of development and testing.

That is why early research will be very necessary for the network. Teams will need some time to evaluate their designs and possible problems with them. Wallet providers and custodians will also be able to plan the transition of their users to new protocols.

Galaxy says that the program will allow for more coordination in the industry of digital assets. Researchers, developers, and organizations will be able to collaborate on this issue through the program. Such collaboration might minimize problems that could emerge when an upgrade is made in the future.

What Galaxy Grants Mean for Bitcoin Security

The grants may support practical testing before network changes are proposed. Developers would be able to assess the impact of post-quantum signatures on the performance and size of transactions.

Security assessments could detect possible vulnerabilities in the tools before they are adopted by Bitcoin users.

According to Galaxy, the program is part of early preparation efforts. The initiative does not imply an imminent quantum attack. It seeks to advance research before the risk becomes critical.
