Morpho Launches 2026 Midnight Fixed-Rate Lending on Base

What to know:

  • Morpho’s Midnight on Base offers cbBTC/USDC term loans with locked rates, moving beyond variable pools.
  • Targets demand for predictable Bitcoin-backed lending on L2s, bringing TradFi-style term products on-chain.
  • Gives institutions planning tools and developers new building blocks, but faces liquidity fragmentation and possible regulatory review.

Morpho

Morpho is launching with Midnight, a novel fixed-rate mortgage platform. The service is now live on the Base sidechain, which is basically an Ethereum 2.0 network by Coinbase, and Morpho has set up a cbBTC/USDC market to give structured, time-bound loans to the DeFi’s L2 ecosystem.

Midnight is just another fixed-rate instrument built on Morpho’s lending system, which is completely open to anyone and requires no approval. Unlike Morpho’s current variable-rate pools, users can get their interest rates and repayment schedule fixed beforehand in case of Midnight.

Their main market pair is between cbBTC, Coinbase’s wrapped Bitcoin, and USDC, with the terms lasting from short to medium periods. This setup caters to borrowers who want the certainty of the rate and lenders who desire a guaranteed yield without the aid of centralized order books.

Following the launch on Base, a Morpho team developer shared an explanation, “In Morpho we have this concept of pools. The pools can be variable rate or fixed rate.

From Floating Rates to Term-Based Lending

The variable rate pools, when a user deposits liquidity or when someone lends or borrows, they are automatically matched through the pool by some smart contracts. For variable rate pools, the rates will fluctuate and borrowers/lenders will just receive the rate that the contract gives to them.

The developer went on to explain, “For fixed rate pools, as the name suggests, it’s a different thing. It’s about locking up assets for a certain period of time and then getting the fixed rate interest at the end. A fixed rate pool is really an underlying mechanism for a financial product, like a mortgage, where the borrower is committing to pay back a certain amount of interest over a certain time period.“

Base and cbBTC/USDC Fuel Institutional DeFi Growth

Base, and cbBTC/USDC on Base have become an essential platform for institutional DeFi, thanks to a Coinbase distribution model and minimal fees. The addition of cbBTC/USDC is consistent with the demand for collateral supported by Bitcoin and dollar liquidity on L2s.

In DeFi, compared to TradFi, fixed-rate products have not developed as much as term lending being the standard. Midnight’s release will see if on-chain users will choose fixed-term structures over variable loans that are repeatedly renewed, something similar has been experimented with by Notional and Pendle in their protocols.

Implications of Midnight for the Market Participants

Predictive planning and risk mitigation are the two main advantages that the institutional investors and the corporate treasuries of the business will be deriving from Midnight, whereas in CeFi only they had those benefits. Through Midnight, DeFi opens up a new avenue for developers to leverage rate curves and design innovative products.

Retail customers will get an idea of their future expenses because fixed rates are easier to plan for, although there’s a risk involved from the liquidity split across different maturities. When fixed-rate markets grow popular and get widely used, securities-like behaviors may arise, prompting regulators to look closely at them.
