Jack Dorsey’s Block Scandal: 100 Pages of Secrets Exposed

May 3, 2024 by Lipika Deka

In a shocking revelation, Jack Dorsey’s Block is facing serious compliance issues after a disgruntled former employee submitted about 100 pages of documents revealing alleged yearslong lapses in the company’s major divisions, Square and Cash App. The documents also outlined details on how the lack of vigilance led to processing thousands of transactions involving countries subject to U.S. sanctions, including Cuba, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela.

Federal prosecutors are investigating the fintech giant founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey for allegedly facilitating multiple cryptocurrency transactions linked to terrorist organizations. These transactions, which included credit card payments, dollar transfers, and Bitcoin exchanges, were not reported to the government as mandated by law, according to sources familiar with the matter.

As per NBC News report, many transactions involved small dollar amounts but were significant enough to raise alarms about Block’s compliance protocols. The former employee criticized the company’s compliance framework bluntly: “From the ground up, everything in the compliance section was flawed,” they said, adding that it was “led by people who should not be in charge of a regulated compliance program.”

A second insider, also familiar with Block’s monitoring strategies and speaking on condition of anonymity to NBC News, supported these claims, highlighting severe deficiencies within the company’s oversight mechanisms.

Block’s Alleged Missteps Mirror Binance’s Troubles

In the wake of recent allegations against Block, the fintech powerhouse behind Square and Cash App, crypto parallels are being drawn to CZ and Binance. Industry experts are speculating about Dorsey’s untouched status, theorizing that his previous cooperation with federal investigations during his tenure at Twitter may be providing him with some form of shield against prosecution. The details revealed indicate that numerous transactions involving credit cards, dollar transfers, and Bitcoin slipped through without being reported to the government as mandated by regulations.

This oversight raises significant concerns about Block’s compliance systems and their ability to adhere to international financial laws. The implications of these allegations could be profound for Block, potentially impacting its operational integrity and leading to increased scrutiny from regulators. As the investigation unfolds, the financial community and regulators will be closely monitoring the situation, waiting to see if any legal actions will be taken against Dorsey or his companies.
