NVIDIA Expands Australia AI Infrastructure With Eight Partners

NVIDIA is working with eight Australian infrastructure providers on an AI factory expansion targeting up to two gigawatts of capacity by 2027. The buildout includes major GPU deployments and new data centers, while financing, grid connections, and construction timelines remain undisclosed.

NVIDIA said on September 9 that eight Australian infrastructure providers will support an AI factory expansion targeting two gigawatts of capacity by 2027. The plan focuses on computing growth. Several sites will host the buildout.

According to the report, Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk are involved in the project. The companies will prepare land, power access, and powered-shell capacity for future DSX systems. Each partner will operate its own facilities.

What NVIDIA Will Provide for Australia’s 2GW AI Expansion

NVIDIA will supply accelerated computing systems, networking equipment, software, and technical support for the planned infrastructure. The company will not operate the participating data centers. The two-gigawatt target therefore represents combined capacity across several projects.

The proposed expansion would exceed Australia’s current data center computing capacity. Australia has about 1.6 gigawatts, based on Data Centres Australia and DC Byte figures cited by Reuters. The new target remains a forward-looking capacity plan.

Sharon AI plans to deploy as many as 68,000 NVIDIA GPUs under the collaboration. Those systems will connect through Quantum InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet networking. The company expects them to serve startups, enterprises, government agencies, and research organizations.

IREN will use the chipmaker’s DSX reference architecture alongside its experience in power, land, data centers, and GPU operations. Its contribution includes the planned 800-megawatt Bundey campus in South Australia. IREN previously focused heavily on Bitcoin mining infrastructure.

How CDC and NVIDIA Support Larger AI Capacity

The company has increasingly expanded into AI cloud services and high-performance computing. That move reflects shared infrastructure needs across crypto mining and artificial intelligence operations. Both sectors require large power supplies, cooling systems, and specialized computing facilities.

The CDC said it currently operates more than 550 megawatts across Australia and New Zealand. It also has another 800 megawatts under construction. The company says its facilities use renewable electricity and zero-water cooling systems.

These environmental impacts have not been independently confirmed across all sites under consideration. According to NVIDIA, DSX is an AI Factory platform for full-stack development that includes design, computing, networking, software, and reference architecture. This platform is also compatible with CUDA.

NVIDIA states that DSX will allow for supporting future hardware versions without any need for redesigning infrastructure at all levels.

Higher computing capacity may help to increase access to Nemotron’s open models at the local level. Organizations in Australia are already applying the company’s AI technology in practice.

The healthcare technology firm Heidi employs Nemotron technologies in clinical settings. Atlassian leverages these technologies within semantic search and other features of its Rovo AI platform. It demonstrates possible applications of local computing capacity in enterprise-level settings.

Why the 2GW Target Still Depends on Approvals and Power

NVIDIA did not disclose costs, individual investments, and computing capacity that was financed or planned or connected to the grid. The two-gigawatt number cannot be considered as an example of completed infrastructure.

Power availability and access to the electric grid will be essential for project implementation. Data centers work 24/7, while GPU clusters may need better cooling compared to regular computing centers. Construction permits will also be needed for each location.

According to NVIDIA, new data centers will enable additional power-generation projects. Yet, the company did not provide details on power-generating assets, contracts, or connection agreements. Lack of such information will impact timelines of individual sites’ transitions from planning to implementation.

At the same time, NEXTDC disclosed its plans to raise A$1.1 billion through convertible notes to finance its entire AI infrastructure program. As reported by Reuters, this financing is not limited to DSX cooperation. It should be understood as financing not exclusively for DSX locations.

Further measurable events will include obtaining of site permits, agreements on power supply, construction milestones, and schedules for GPU delivery. No joint schedule was provided by NVIDIA and its partners regarding capacity addition until 2027.
